Nah, you just need to know how to think like the other guy. Put yourself in their shoes. If you can identify how they think, what they value, their motivations, desires and fears, then you can get a fairly good grip on what you're looking at.
Criminal profilers get into the heads of their subjects, but they don't go off and commit the crimes. Same goes for hunters. You can become fairly intimate with the habits and tendencies of your prey, but that doesn't mean that you turn into a deer or elk.
