Well if you are a hardcore fan I'd spend the $$$ on either Kingdom Come or New Frontier in the hardcover slipcased editions.

But if it was just trade paperbacks:

Watchmen: The Alan Moore classic decontruction of the super-hero myth holds up today and does not fail to entertain or get better after multiple reads (I am still finding stuff I missed).

I really loved "Red Son" Superman grows up in communist Russsia. The story has a great ending that ties it all up and makes you want to re-read it on the spot.

The Authority in Trade paperback is a good read especially the first two volumes in the series.

Planetary is actually a more enjoyable read in paperback as you uncover the secret history of the universe.

Hope this helps.

YES. There are more good TPB's out there than you've probably got money for (unless your relatives are loaded, and in that case, I'm available for next year's holidays)
Some of the best, in no particular order:
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
Batman: Year One
Batman: Strange Apparitions
Watchmen
Justice League: A New Beginning
Transmetropolitan: Back on the Street
The Golden Age
Crisis on Infinite Earths
JLA: Earth 2
The Starman, Sandman, Swamp Thing and Hellblazer books are very good, but be prepared to get hooked and wanting to get all of them, which will definitely be expensive

And MY pick for one of the best, even though its not a DC book, is:
Wanted
It's amazing on many levels. You'll love it.
