Java is a programming language that is very compatible, and can be run on the web or on machines. It has the same syntax as C++, except it's simplified (for example, pointers are gone) which consequently makes it a little less efficient. Moreover, Java was designed with Object Oriented Programming (OOP) in mind, whereas C++ is a version of C that was retrofitted for OOP, again making Java easier to program for object-oriented (or data-driven) applications.
I've been told that engineers use Java for testing (since it's easier to program) and then C++ for development/production (since it's more efficient).
Also:
Java, slang for coffee, is a useful aid in many fields, especially computer science, particularly for the college student before finals or the professional before a deadline.

Java is a programming language developed by Sun and is widely used. A 'cut-down' version of it exists for web development (Java Script). It is used to make all kinds of programs - applets for playing games or watching videos on webpages, office solutions (see Star office by Sun), operating systems. There are plenty more uses for it.
Java in itself is similar other programming languages such as C or C++. The capabilities of the actual language are similar, has some stronger points and some weaker ones as do all languages.
Java has one good point a lot of other languages doesn't have - it doesn't rely on the platform (computer/operating system -OS)
Most languages when compiled will only work on the OS it was compiled on. Occasionally the program will not rum smoothly on different machines regardless if the OS is the same or not due to differences in memory and processing speed.
Java when compiled creates a semi-compiled (for want of a better expression) program. The Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is available for all operating systems and processor types, the JVM then allows the semi-compilled program to run on the machine.
You can therefore move the program from machine to machine without giving much thought to the capabilities of the individual machines.

java is a programming language originally designed to create programs for gagets (like your tv remote control, microwave, kids toys). All you need to run a java program is a jvm (java virtual machine). Most browser either have java or can have it downloaded to work with the browser.
Want to write a program on your mac but use it on your pc? Java is for you. Browse the internet from your toaster oven? Even my cell phone has java.

Java is software which works in conjunction with web pages. It provides lots of functions which "enhance" the way pages look and work.
You are using it all the time (and also Javascript which is different) as you browse the web.

It is used for certain applications and web applets. It's not very good compared to what Flash can do, but some programs and web pages require it. It's best to download it if that's what you're asking, because it's good to have just in case.
