You only ovulate for 1 day, but you can get pregnant 3-4 days before and 24 hours after.
Ovulation is when your fallopian tubes releases an egg for Fertilization. The egg is ready for fertilization for 24 hours before it dies, but sperm can also live for up to 4 days, so if you have sex before you ovulate, you can get pregnant and any time during ovulation up to 24 hours.

Ovulation, itself takes about 12-24 hours. You are most fertile the 4 days before you ovulate and the day of. Those are your best chances for getting pregnant.

The egg is only viable for 12-24 hours, which stinks if you're trying to get pregnant! You can google it and get more information. To get pregnant and lower the risk of miscarriage (by not having an "old" egg get fertilized) you have have sex before you ovulate so the "boys" are already waiting for the egg when it pops. Remember, sperm can live for up to 5 days, but 2-3 days is the safer bet. Most books and websites recommend sex every other day to conceive ... as do most husbands!
