This is on Nathaniel Hawthorne's THE SCARLET LETTER

In reviewing, our teacher said that one of the many, but helpful things we can do for the test is to outline the growth of Pearl... but I know she doesn't mean the phsyical/ literal growth. So, if not that, then what? I know at the very end, "the spell was broken" and she no longer had to be that scarlet letter because the truth was out. But how is this growth and/or What Exactly Is the Growth In/Of Pearl?

Thank you very much if you have any input on this, I really appreciate any helpful information.

I believe what your teacher is seeking is an examination of how Pearl evolves as a character.

I would advise in this case to go through the story and underline every reference to her name and what Hawthorne states about Pearl. After you have done this, outline how Hawthorne charts her growth through description; through her dialogues with her mother, through the way that she is viewed by her mother, the people in the village, and in the novel.

Look at the way Pearl is described--how and when Pearl becomes aware of herself and the Scarlet Letter, etc.. this will aid you.

ok this may not be much of a help but also it may be. I learned when analyzing literature to use whats called the 3 read method. You first read what your reading once and put it in literal terms as in what its exactly saying. Second put it in figuartive terms which is what the true meaning is. Third you put it all together and basicly make a conclusion adding the two together! Hope it helps.

I hated the Scarlet Letter..
Try this website I used it for all my English Lit college classes.

I think your instructor wants to know about personal growth of the character, how this experience affected her and what changes in the character's personality and relationships occurred as a result.
