They use the relay system. A hearing operator works as the go-between. She is able to talk to the hearing impaired person via keyboard and monitor. There is a special phone # to call in order to use this system.

they have aspecial phone they talk into that calls an operator who then talks to the person on the other end, and types the answers back to the deaf person. I used to be the person they asked for in my last job because I was the only one who had the patience and education to make informative responses.

If they don't have a keyboard hooked onto the phone, there is also a special code which involves tapping on the phone.
Otherwise they just don't use the phone. The internet is good enough.

By using a telewriter. It works much like text messaging through a call centre where the message is then relayed to a hearing person.

There is a service by the western institute for the deaf that connects your phone to your computer so you can talk on screen. Anyone can use it, you phone the intitute and they type what you say and read back the answers.
