Because it helps support a garbage system. Like when you quit smoking. Your sense of smell starts to work better and you become aware of stuff. If you started to listen to and look at quality, you'd become acutely aware how neck deep in garbage you really are. At the highest levels.

If you have any knowledge of fishing tournaments, you'll understand that each fisherman uses a different kind of bait. With hundreds of boats on the water, one combination of method + location + bait will eventually pull in the winning fish.

If enough hooks are dropped into the lake, one will produce a "current winner".

If fish have nothing to eat other than attractive food attached to hooks, the biggest of the school will eventually follow the lead of the smaller ones around it and become a trophy meant to be a symbol of success.

If you throw enough crap into the water, fish will feed. The stuff attached to the hooks aren't there for the fish; it's for the people in the boat.

Sorry, it's not the industry. It's us. Those of us with discriminating taste don't buy the most records. We have to accept and ignore the garbage, because without it, our music would be a lot more expensive.
The idiots are financing our entertainment, and I say let'em!

easy. it's much more profitable to market passable music than it is to nurture, invest and give artistic freedoms to musicians and talented artists.

besides, if you have seen the film, The Corporation, you will know that companies have no soul, so if the people running the show are only in it for the cash and kudos, that only leaves the fans and the artists to care about the music and the soul.
