Can someone make sense of the ending to me?
When Mark Wahlberg's character returns to his own time, he finds that his world is run by the apes.
Can someone tell me how this ending makes sense of the film?

Ok, I've seen Back to the future and The Terminator films so I have a grasp of altering the past and then changing your future, but this film still doesnt make sense. I read Pierre Boules novel many years ago but it still doesn't add up!
Any ideas?

Anything Mark Wahlberg's character said or did in this future he found himself in has no relevance on the past. Time moves forward, one second at a time. So, how did his actions in the future affect the past? It doesn't make sense. Can someone explain the ending of this film?

He has not returned to the correct time zone, but one set in the future for an alternative time zone in a parallel universe!
'Planet of the Apes (2001) ending / spoiler
Davidson (Wahlberg) finds out the monument that the apes were worshipping was actually the ship that he launched from at the beginning of the movie. It was a monument because the monkeys that were kept in the cages escaped and created the ape society on the planet. It had been there for thousands of years, which means Davidson jumped forward in time through a black hole. Davidson finds his ship and travels back to Earth. When he jumped back, time went back to normal and he hears a voice on the radio, guding him in. He crashes near the Washington Monument, and sees a statue of General Thade instead of Lincoln. Police rush to the scene of the crash and they all turn out to be apes.'

The idea isn't really to make sense of the film. It's a nod to the original novel by Pierre Boulle, where at the end the main character returns to Earth and finds the apes in charge. As in the movie, time dilation is involved.
In some ways, the Tim Burton version has more in common with the Boulle novel than with the 1960s movie.

Is it not concievable that Thade escaped, found a way to fix the ship and travelled through the time portal, only ending up even further in the past than Mark Wahlberg, then proceeded to alter all of history in his favor?
see back to the future part II for similar concept.

I know what you mean. I get all frustrated with Terminator because if John connor's Dad came back after John sent him....anyhoo.
Just forget about it! It will never make sense. Just think of it this way: Why try and make logical conclusions out a film about talking monkeys. LOL

I'm not too sure, but the way I understand it is that the general was somehow put back in power or took over once again by force, leaving his legacy for the future world. Either that or somehow when
he returned to the past, he entered a distorted timeline where the events he tried to change had already ocurred.

Yeah - it is supposed to be like a sci-fi horror. In the days when it was originally made.
