#1, Everyone's labor is different. You can't really rely on the 3 in 10 rule. However, if you aren't dilating, then you aren't having a baby right this minute. It's quite possible that these are not braxton hicks but true contractions. It sounds to me like your baby is posterior, which means facing up instead of facing down. That slows labor down and makes it more painful. (It's sometimes called back labor). My advice to you is to do cat stretches. Get on your hands and knees.. Arch your back up to the ceiling and then down again. Do that a few times, it will relieve some pressure on your back and encourage the baby to move. Also, when you sit down to relax, sit with your belly hanging forward and your arms resting on a stool or pillow in front of you. Don't lean back. Take a bath, relax. You might be in labor but if your baby is posterior it might be a while. Do you have a doula or support person. Have them rub your back and apply pressure to your muscles. That will help. Don't get discouraged. If you feel like your contractions have changed, and they feel more like menstrual cramps, call your doctor. You may be in serious labor. I'm sure everything is fine. The more you relax, the better it will be. Congratulations!

It almost sounds like real labor to me. I would try drinking a lot of water. My dr told me that if its braxton hicks contractions then drinking water will help the intensity drop some. Also try concentrating on something like a video game, put a puzzle to together, do a word find. Sometimes if you turn your focus or concentrate on something else, the braxton hicks will lesson, and eventually go away. If it is in fact the real thing... then they of course will stay as intense and become more frequent. Good luck. Get ready for baby!

I would say definitely call, if not go back to the Midwife. Braxton Hix contractions should not be painful. Normally as a nurse I would ask you to describe your pain, i.e. location. Is the pain in your back? does it move? Does it start somewhere then increase around the body? On a scale of One to ten, ten being the worst, rate it. if its in your back and moving toward your belly button, and is higher than 6 GO.

the BH contractions can be really painful. I was told that if contractions go away when you change positions or drink water, then they're BH because the "real" thing won't go away no matter what you do.

I find that a warm shower really helps as it relaxes the muscles. Even when I was in real labor with my first child and the contractions were about 7-10 minutes apart, I spent about 2 hours in the shower to ease the pain.

Hope that helps...it should be any day now for you.

Congrats and good luck!

Braxton hicks could be painful specially at this time of the pregnancy as it's the preparation contractions of the uterus before the real labour. But if they r really so painful then i would suggest u to see the midwife again and ask some relief methods.

Hmmm... it's so hard to tell at that stage. However, when you say that you can't talk or walk or move, that makes me thing it's a bit more than b.h., and closer to the real thing. Even though you may be in real labor, it may still take a long, long time for you to get dilated.

Also, labor contractions are different for everyone. They don't HAVE to be one every x minutes, or last x seconds (as long as it's over 30 or so seconds). They have to be regular, last longer than 30 or so seconds, and increase in intensity and frequency.

It's my thinking that you are in actual labor, but it's going to take a while for you to get dilated - that's what takes the most time for most women, and what most have to stay at home to wait for.

I do suggest calling your midwife again and telling her about your fears and pain. Keep her on the phone as long as you need to, and be sure she fully understands what's going on.

Good luck to you! I hope everything goes very well for you!

To me it sounds like you are in the begining stages of labor. Try to drink some water or juice and take a shower IF they are braxton hicks they will slowly go away. IF this is the real thing they will continue and get closer. Good luck hun.

ARE YOU REATARDED....your going into labour silly.
I rememeber when I was ready to have my kid, I woke up at like 7am with ultra labour pains, took a hot bath and nothing helped, so I went shopping for the day until I couldnt stand it anymore, which was around 7pm, so i went straight to the hospital and I was like 5cm by them, about 13 hrs later I had my kid.
