until now the mid eighty's there became usually 4 bolts that held it on. After that they looked as though it would usually leave the bolts there to hold the pulley on however the fan became threaded onto the pump. The shaft sounds like a huge nut. There are particular kit to unscrew it. maximum shops and condo places have a kit that works on maximum American engines. Its usually a pair of long flat wrenches and a wierd looking bar element. The wrenches circulate on the massive nut area of the fan. The unusual bar is to snatch onto the bolts on the pulley to hold it collectively as you turn the nut. I even have tried many cases to get them off with any variety of the a hundred's of different kit I very own. finally went and have been given the marvelous kit and it takes 2 minutes. might factors shops lease the kit for unfastened in case you purchase the climate from them. You pay for the completed fee of the device yet once you come back it you get a hundred% credit. Loosening the fan will usually be an identical direction the pump turns. In different words in case you have been to have the wrench on the fan and grew to become the engine in its standard direction the fan might get tight. With the hot serpentine belts each so often the fan and pump dont turn an identical direction because of the fact the crankshaft.

You need a special tool. Does the fan clutch have a big nut right behind it where it connects to the water pump? It is also is left hand thread. That means you have to go right to loosen the fan clutch. Leave the serpentine belt on. It helps keep pressure on the water pump pulley.
If you are talking about the 4 bolts that attach the fan clutch to the watter pump. All they do is remove the pulley.

You have to hold the pulley and turn the nut. This sounds easy but I have found this to be difficult especially as the miles and time take affect. Use of a big cresent wrench with a large pair of vise grips locked onto the pulley and turned until jammed into a bracket or water pump is what I used to use and do. Once you turn the pulley until the visegrips contact something hard, the nut will spin off easily. Obviously you have to be careful you don't damage things by overtightening the visegrips or where the grips contact the motor. Good luck.

If I remember right...there are 4 nuts.....13mm I think. 2 ways...put the fan belt on and use the belt ( by putting tension on it ) to keep the pulley from turning....or....use a screw driver and place it long wise between 2 nuts....prevents the pulley from turning and then you can loosen the nuts. The nuts are regular thread....righty tightey....lefty loosey.. good luck.

There is a tool that fits into the holes on the front of the pulley to hold it. Try a parts house that mabe rents this tool.also its to the left to loosen it.

if you took the belt off put it back on as this helps add pressure on the waterpump while you are turning the bolts.
