These are going to be explained when the season returns in February. He had an affair with a mysterious Asian woman and got the tattoos during that time. There are to be some pretty sexy scenes between the two when the back-story airs. I can hardly wait - though I will be green with jealousy. lol.

The first character means "Eagle".
The second character means "Strike" as a verb.
The third one means "Long"
and
the last one means "Void".

They are actually the actor's (Matthew Fox) tattoos. The producers allowed him to leave them uncovered for the show. I believe they said they're going to work them in somehow.
