In the past Buffalo used the K-Gun offense. Atlanta used the Run and Shoot. It seems as if 10 years ago so many teams were unique in their playcalling and team composition. Nowadays though it's either the West coast offense or something run-based. The Colts are an exception to the rule, however. Has the game hit a lull in innovation? Will the NFL completely become a copy cat league or will someone in the future come along and create some offense or defense that no one has ever seen before?

Good observation raynrock. Is it a coincidence that 10 years ago when offenses were more unique, coaches also stayed with their teams longer. Two of the longest tenured head coaches, Bill Cowher and Mike Shanahan have been doing it their way. Mike Shanahan popularized zone blocking for his running game and Bill Cowher stuck with the 3-4 D his whole career.

I think so because there are always people looking for new ways to do things. With more athletic qb coming out of college, defenses are going back to the drawing board with ways to defend them. and offenses are going to have to combat those changes. I think more innovations will come by way of rule changes. the nfl wants more points and so do some fans. so everytime a rule changes to favor the offense they get some room to make changes and the defense must adjust.

Absolutely not. The players are bigger and stronger than yesteryear, (or 10 years for that matter) and the NFL defenses are just too fast for a run and shoot offense and other offensive innovations used in the college game. As far defensive innovations, I just don't think you'll see anything else because the defense's sole purpose is to stop the offense, and most if not all defenses are geared to stop either the run (like a 4-4 defense or anything that has "eight in the box" or more) or the pass (3-3-5 defense).
All in all, it's about players, not plays anyway.

There will be additional innovations in the league. Somebody mentioned earlier about the pistol offense that is used at Nevada. Also, there is nothing new under the sun. Eventually everything makes a comeback, from the Run and Shoot to the 3-4, just in variation.

the only thing where gonna see change are the name of what they call the plays. in the NCAA they use a wider range a formations ,like Nevada use the pistol formation. (pretty much the shotgun but the QB stands closer than if you where in the shotgun.) In the NFL the coaches do what they are conferable with ,and also nearly 75-80% of the coaches in the league used to play or coach together. If you can find a website on George Seifert and the coaches that used to be under him you will be amazed.

Offense : I see at least 5 RBs from this years rookie class making at least one pro bowl. McFadden, Forte, Johnson, Stewert, Slaton... If Brandon Marshall isn't counted as a big name, then he is the next one. That guy is a beast. Ditto for Michael Turner. Defense : Jon Beason, LB Carolina. He was a rookie last year, as was Patrick Willis, but no one looked at Beason because everyone looked at Willis. Beason set a franchise tackle record as a rookie last year, and is on pace to break it again this year. I would say Patrick Willis, but he is already a star, and viewed as a top 5 LB in the league.

This is a really good question. I think there will continue to be innovations, but what you need is coaches who aren't afraid to deviate from the norm. Most coaches play it safe out of a fear of being fired.

Of course their will be. Teams are looking for ways to get an advantage all the time and a new offensive formation would do just that.

I totally throw out the USC/Michigan game...For many variables...I think the arguement will resurface if the game is a blowout...
Back to your queston....I think the defenses are a step ahead of the offenses, not allowing them to become more dynamic.
