This may be old fashioned, but might I suggest a diary for writing her private thoughts down in? Sixteen is an emotional time, and some studies I've heard about state that writing down ones thoughts greatly reduces stress. I think it's a thoughtful gift---maybe give it along with a nice pen set and have the diary engraved with who gave her the diary and when with a special message from you.

not a car at any age..the kids should be saving up for that themselves or paying back the loan for it...can they still take driving lessons/have temps at 16? I got my son private driving lessons...they spend more time with the kids and the ratio of passing is much higher than doing it through the schools. Otherwise maybe a class ring or a laptop if on the higher end....track phone if on lower end..plus she has to pay the bills as she talks more on it..responsibility is key.
