I need to connect my laptop to my PC to transfer some files... niether of the two machines have internet... can I hook them both together via USB. if so how do I access files from one machine in another?

Buy a USB or ethernet (both computers will need ethernet adapters for that option) crossover cable, either one will work.

first you can connect the laptop with the pc by using network cable.. so you must have the network card in the two machines.
network or LAN ( local area Network) should resolve ur problem in the internet sharing and in the files transfering too..
you can also connect them using usb cable but you should have software installed into the two machines. but all the available software can only let you transfer you files between but you cant get internet sharing line.
to connect the two machines using LAN you must enter these values into:
open Network connection- right click on local area connection -properties -in general tab choose internet protocol TCP/IP then click properties- check the use the following IP address and enter these valubles :
for the 1st PC which must connected to the Internet
IP address : 192.168.0.1
Subnetmask : 255.255.255.0
Default gateway : 192.168.0.1
DNS settings you must get from the ISP
the 2nd PC :IP address : 192.168.0.3
Subnetmask : 255.255.255.0
Default gateway : 192.168.0.1
and DNS the same of the first one .

Use data cable CAT5 connect. More details in Windows Help for Home Networking. Follow instructions of Engineering It to setup TCP/IP addresses.

you need a router to connect them together using a CAT5 cable.
