Merck Manual says it is an asphyxiant, and may have narcotic effects at high concentrations. Kinda like huffing paint I suppose.

I seem to recall seeing a program on the history channel that reported high levels of low molecular weight VOCs like Butene found at a potential site for the Oracle of Delphi. In the story the fumes were coming out of a geothermal steam vent. The pitch was "Hey maybe those visions were really just drug induced hallucinations."

1-Butene and 2-butene are both synthetic hydrocarbons that come from cracking of higher hydrocarbons. It was first made or discovered in the late 19th century. No one knows who made it. It has no ancient uses.
