You need to give it to an editor first. The editor will go through and fix all spelling, grammar etc. And no, you cant do that yourself no matter how good you are. After that, take it to another editor and repeat. Where pictures or illustrations are concerned, publishing companies prefer to do that themselves so dont worry about illustrating. Finally, send the manuscript to publishers one by one. Dont send out to any more than one publisher at one time. Publishers are very strict on the format of the manuscript. One particular publisher I dealt with wanted each page single sided with double spaced lines. The pages had to be binded together with two staples. ie, if there were three, it would go straight in the trash. The cover had to clearly state the title and my name etc.
You will have to do research on the publisher before you send it in because the slightest error and they will not even look at the manuscript.
Most importantly, dont give up. After being rejected ten times, you just may be accepted on the eleventh!
Good luck
ps - this may sound silly but dont put a put copyright on it for example Copyright © 2006 Mason T. The publisher sees this as amature and they dont like it.

I have been working on publishing a book for the past six months and I would like to share with you what I have learned so far. First, "Self Publishing" is not an easy way to go whether or not your a first time author it can cost a lot of money and you can end up with a lot of copies of your book you don't know what to do with. Next, finding an agent may be the best possible way for any author to go because the writing industry is very very competitive. Last, don't get discouraged! It may take some time for you to find the answers you are looking for but I promise the answers are out there. There are several web sites you can go to for information in fact too many to list here. Begin your search by looking up "Book Publishing Agents" on any search engine. I wish you well and success.

If your book is about a certain topic - let's say women's studies, then find other similar books in the library and offer your book to that publisher.
You have a lot of learning to do - many people get the publisher FIRST.
If it is fiction, there are books about who publishes fiction and what kind of fiction.
Expect lots of rejection letters when you get it sent off.
Good luck
