I'm a manager at a retail store and my girlfriend is about an hour drive away. My boss said I can't visit her on my day off cause my employee's aren't responsible enough and I can't be more then 20min away from my store. Is this legal? If its not can someone find me some documentation where I can confront him about it? Thank you!

No, I don't get compensaded for him calling on my day off, he calls my personal cell phone and my bill was over $1000.00 last month cause of the work calls.
I've also never signed a contract/terms of employment saying I can't be more then 20mins away. I'm just curious if legally there's documentation somewhere on the internet cause I can't find it.
Again thanks.

No, that is NOT Legal.
Boss's cannot controll your personal life, the only thing they can controll -legally- is your pay, work hours, and job position.
Leave work at work. Get into the habit of leaving work at home and not bringing it into your personal life because that will only add to your level of stress. Keep your professional life separate from your personal life as best as you can. This also includes having friends who you don’t work with so that you can detach yourself from your work life rather than bringing it home with you.

Well, I don't think that it is illegal. But, I'd suggest you look into some legal documentation from the internet or some other sources. But, you said that he told you that you couldn't see you girlfriend on your day off... it's your day off. If you don't have to work then why does he care? He can't control you unless you are at work on the job. Then in that case there are usually rules that you cannot have your girlfriend or boyfriend there to distract you. It's just how it goes. But, I don't understand about it being on your day off.

Unless your contract or whatever terms you agreed to/signed when you initially began working at the retail store (e.g. on call 24hr, etc.) states the terms your boss spoke of, then you can do whatever you want on your day off. He has no right to control your life. period. What he's saying is ridiculous.

Time to find new employment. I don't believe he can do this legally but there is nothing to stop him from firing you if you are on salary. ie normal salary requirements are 24 x 7 . Of course all this information is in your employee handbook. Which is the first place I would look.

no it's not legal unless you signed any documents stating that you can't be more than 20 minutes away from the store. Ask him when he's getting a ball & chain for you.

Unless you have some of agreement ( it should be in writing) and you are being compensated (money) then you are not on call after you leave the job. Simple way to handle it is tell the boss that you expect to be paid if you are on call.

I dont know if he can find himself in any legal trouble, but what he is doing is not legal by any means, unless you are on-call and have some sort of agreement. But since you dont, I would just say screw him and visit your girlfriend

Did he verbally or in writing tell you that you are on call? If you are on call on that day then yes you are responsible. My husband had a job where he was on call every other weekend. But on the weekend he was not on call he could do what ever he pleased and go to Timbuktu if he wanted.

I don't think he can dictate what you do and don't do on your days off but the motivation for that is to train yoru employees to do well. And the drawback here is regardless of what he can and can't do, it's your job on the line, and it's what you're willing to lose. And, lastly, if your girlfriend can, she should visit you as much as possible on your days off since you can't leave. It's sacrificing for your relationship and if you're willing to do it, I think she should be too.

I don't know if its illegal. But how else would your boss know you were planning to see your girlfriend (and she lives an hour away) without you telling him. I say keep you and your bosses relationship on a professional level. Don't tell him your business and he won't be in it.
