Do the councils/goverment, deliberately set the traffic lights to go red as a car approaches, and then stay at red, for a long time, even though theres no other cars around, keeping the busier road at red, longer than the quiet road??

Yes I have sat at lights that have shown red lights in all directions.

Yes, it slows people down, if the road is relatively clear and you are approaching the lights at the maximum speed limit they know and will change to red. Its a traffic calming measure.

Next time approach the lights at a slow speed and they will not change (unless another vehicle has caused it to happen)

traffic light phasing is a real science and believe it or not, some people spend their lives doing it, and its not straightforward. I work with some 'signal engineers' and they always seem to know what they are going. But traffic lights aren't just for cars, they are for people to cross the road and cylists to cross as well.

I think though that traffic lights are sometimes bad news and it might be better to just keep the traffic moving, would be great to try out!!!!

No! But i know exactly what you mean! I knew someone in the police several years ago, and the rumour control had it, that if they had to drive somewhere fast, they would get their control room to press a button, which would make all the traffic lights in the town go green. Ridiculous! Hey ive just thought, why doesnt that 'Innovations magazine' invent some gadget to do just that?!!!

Yes. It is a plan to trap innocent motorists into getting frustrated and leaving them with nothing to do but write their frustrations on a site like this.

On the other hand...I would rather be stuck at a red light than have to spend an evening with someone who wanted to discuss someting as boring as this!!!

It certainly does seem that way sometimes - especially if you ride a motorcycle. For everything you ever wanted to know about traffic lights and system for making your vehicle change them, try the link below. They make a legal, cheap traffic light changer. Very cool. I have several of them.

Smaller towns don't want you passing through if they can help it. The lights are timed to slow you down, and wished you never came that way. Cities have so much traffic, they NEED to keep it moving so it's in your favor.

i dont know for sure, but it damn feels like it! and why do some drivers slow down approaching green lights, fair enough if their amber, but green means go if clear!

also any london drivers, do you remember when the congestion charge came in, all lights seemed to really favour the busy route to make it seem like 'traffic was reduced' i wonder if it will happen again for the extension!

Don't think so. Sometimes there are sensors near the white lines that you have to pull up to to get the light to change. But other than that, I really doubt it.
