No. But some safeguards are in order. First, take the Red Cross Babysitting course. That will teach you a lot. Second, you are WORKING when you are babysitting. You may not have friends come over or make or receive personal phone calls. Third, the first few times you babysit, do it close to home and while at least one parent is home so you can call for backup if something comes up that you do not know how to deal with. My daughter babysat at 11+ and did very well, but she was restricted to working for families on our block (and when I was home) for about a year. By then she was experienced to go to other families in the area, and she had such a good reputation that she had lots of business. She never babysat outside our neighborhood, though.
If the child will be sleeping part of the time, it's okay to take homework or watch TV at very low volume, but friends and phone calls are still forbidden, as you need to be listening for the child at all times, and friends are too distracting, whether there or on the phone.
A plus - my daughter said she never wanted to be a teen mother after finding out how much work young children are!

I believe the requirement should be based more on the levels of maturity and capability of the potential baby-sitter rather than the age. I say this because some twelve-year-olds are too immature to baby-sit, while some ten-year-olds are quite proficient at the job.
Generally speaking, I would say twelve-years-old is not too young, however, if the baby-sitter in question is inexperienced, I would recommend some baby-sitting "practice" while the parents are around to offer guidance. As another poster mentioned, baby-sitting is an excellent opportunity for a young boy or girl to learn responsibility as well as some spending cash. Good luck.

No, you're not too young because it sounds like you're a responsible mature 12 years old. You already show sign of being a responsible young adult by thinking of taking a lifesaving course, this will definitely help you get more babysitting job.

I mean, let's be realistic. In our horrible country called the U.S. 12 year-olds are having sex now a days. Why shouldn't they be old enough to babysit as well. I say yes

If the 12 year old is mature and responsible, then I think they could handle it. Especially if they are taking classes, I don't see why they wouldn't be able to do it.

As long as the kids aren't a handful, a 12 year old is old enough.

Depends on where you live. Some states have laws that state that you have to be 13 to legally babysit.
You may have to do some research.
