1. Equity investments should always be a long term committment.

2. The best equity investment in my opinion is real estate. You could buy into a REIT or even owneship in a property to rent etc.

3. I believe in the US stock market. You could start out in the S&P index fund. remember to think long term. Index funds don't normally charge fees which can save you $20,000 over 30 years.

4. Like investment great, Warren Buffet, invest in company that you believe in. Example, I shave everyday and so does all my guy friends . i use Gillette and so do they. Maybe I should invest in Gillete...

5. Read the excellent books by The Motley Fools.

6. Invest in things that coincide with emerging trends like healthcare , insurance , military equipment , apple etc.

7. Diversify. Do not invest everything you have in Equity. Buy some bonds/commodities. they do better when stocks turn south. Also, if you want a high proportion of stocks, don't invest everything in the same industry or companies.

8. Read company's mission statements and ask yourself if they are achieving that mission and can they continue to achieve that mission into today's market and with their current financial well-being.

9. Take some risks. This will deliver higher returns (or at least it is supposed to...)

10. Pay yourself first! Invest some money and add to that investment each month before you pay for other stuff. The effects of compounding are amazing.

Finally, have fun with it!

There are many web-sites that contain lots of information. I would also visit the local library and they have tons of excellent books you can check out that teach you the basics. Also, check to see if your local community college offers any stock classes. I took one at a campus near me and it really taught me a lot.

Good Luck!!

If you have friends or relatives that invest, ask to be referred to their stockbroker. It is not something you want to attempt to do on your own.
