Well, yeah it hurts! Think about it, you're stretching to your limit to fit a hard object through.
I delivered my 7lbs 8oz, 19inch baby boy completely natural (vaginally, no drugs) in July. I won't sugar coat it -- when he was crowning it hurt like hell. BUT it's temporary and once it's over, you're so focused on your baby that you really don't think about the pain you just went through. I seriously can't remember how much it hurt. I just know it did, but can't recall the sensation, thankfully.
An epidural or spinal block is probably what you're thinking about. The idea of either of those scared me more (have you seen those needles?!) than delivering with no drugs, plus I didn't want to be stuck in bed or have a catheter. It's also better for you and baby in the long run, so I went all natural. To each her own though and do what's best for you! :)
Good luck and congrats!!

Yes, labor hurts. It hurts worse than anything you have ever felt before. And, if you get the epidural, it numbs the pain during labor, but when you move or have to use the restroom it hurts like hell for atleast a week. C sections are much less painful. But, it is uncomfortable getting up and down for a day or two after you get one of them. But, the way I look at it is, it's only a few days out of your whole life. You'll get through it and when you do you will look back and think it wasn't that bad. Beware though, many people say that their epidural either quit working or never worked at all. My advice to you is to get into a labor and birth class. I took one and found it extremely helpful. And, they teach you what muscles to push with. If you push with the wrong muscles you will crap on the delivery table. They teach you breathing techniques that get you through the contractions without freaking out. They also tell you about the stuff you don't see in the movies, like delivering the placenta when you're through. You will know what to expect if you take one of these classes. People fear the unknown. I have given birth and in the last stage of labor, I had a C section. I am not scared of giving birth any longer. Although, I'm not looking forward to it next time.

It hurts, but you don't feel it like you think of pain. When you go in you can decide what you want. Discuss your options with your Dr. I did not get the epidural, the shot, I had something else. It was a shot in my arm, the epidural goes in you spine. I chose to feel my legs while I delivered. When you're done and are holding your baby, you forget the pain. This is what your body was made for, if the pain gets to be too much be sure to ask for meds before you are 7 cm dialated. Otherwise you might not get the meds. You should have plenty of time to decide, most women are in labor 6-20 hours before the baby comes. Good luck! Cograts on the baby!

Well, I had 3 children, 2 with the epidural and 1 natural. When they give you the shot they make you sit on the edge of the bed and bend forward. In my experience, the worst pain was staying still and bending over while have contractions, I do not remember feeling the needle going in, but the pain from the contractions almost instantly went away after the shot. My experience with the natural birth was better than the epidural. It was extremely painful, but instant relief after the delivery, I was able to move my legs and get out of bed sooner than with the epidural. Also, I was only in labor for 4 1\2 hours with the natural birth.

Yes, it hurts like you cannot believe. I really suggest taking a childbirth class, it really helps with some breathing and relaxing techniques. I have one child and my labor was induced which makes it quite long and painfull. I had an epidural which eliviates a lot of the pain and makes it much more bearable, but you have to get to a certain point before they give it to you, so be prepared for that. But the light at the end of the tunnel is when they hand you the baby and it makes it all worth it!! Good Luck and be strong!!

Don't let this scare you...but...it was the worst pain I have ever experienced in my life. I got an epidural (that didn't hurt) but it ran out way before my contractions ended. Most places turn the epidural off when it's time to push anyway. It is excruciating pain but it's only for a short time and you get the rest of your life to enjoy your baby, it's definitely worth all the pain. One thing that won't help the pain is any kind of injectable drug (like Stadol) that they offer, it just makes you feel drunk, it does not relieve pain. You will experience pain, don't be afraid though it's not going to kill you! Good luck!!

Yes, it hurts, but women do it all the time. In my opinion, contractions hurt much worse than actually delivering the baby. You can get an epidural, which will almost completely take away the pain. Don't worry - it's so worth it in the end!

I'm going to give it to you straight: yes it hurts! That's why you take the shot so you won't feel the pain. With my first child I was trying to be brave and not take the shot. Imagine the cramps you get when you are on your period only 10 times stronger. That's how it felt to me. I couldn't wait for the anesthesiologist to get in there and give me my shot, only he was in the next room giving it to someone else who was in labor. It felt like an eternity for him to show up. I would recommend getting it once you start feeling the pain. Once your numb then everything goes a lot smoother. With my second child (thanks to the anesthesia) I had no problems delivering. All I had to do was push : )

The "shot" you are referring to is usually an epidural. What this means is that they will put a small tube in between the spaces of your spine that will allow drugs to be injected directly onto your spinal cord. It is usually left in so that you can get more drugs if they start to wear off before you have delivered. Without the drugs, the pain can be very significant. With it, you will still be able to feel it, but it shouldn't be painful.
