The egg came first.
Would you look at a child of different ethnicities and say the child came before the parents? Of course not. The child is a genetic result of two different people. In the same way, the Chickens (or any creature), as a species, were the successors of another, slightly different creature (it would be a bit off to say species, since evolution does not make such grand jumps with a single egg; in fact, even looking at evolution as that would be only looking at one part of the process). The egg came first, and from it was birthed a new creature, unique from its predecessors in minor ways and from ancestral species in significant ways.
Or you could pretend a chicken popped out of nowhere, underwent immaculate conception, and laid the egg which would asexually birth another chicken that was magically different on some minute level, repeating the process until enough magically slightly different chickens could start laying roosters and interbreeding without incestual mutation.
And if you can't fathom the idea of those divine chickens being magically slightly different... then you'll have to tell farmers that all of their chickens are going to be wiped out by a single strain of a pathogen-based disease.

Technically....the egg came first- a long time before the chicken. Eggs came from reptiles and the species slowly evolved into a chicken. So the egg came first followed several million years later by the chicken :)

The egg, since we assume that the chicken was born due to a genetic mutation from some other similar chicken like animal. So the chicken came from an egg which had a mutation, therefore the answer is the egg!

God put man and all living creatures on the earth to be fruitful and multiply. So he brought forth the chicken and it multiplied by laying eggs.

I would say the chicken. An egg needs a chicken to sit on it to hatch it, so an egg by itself would probably never hatch.
