I fell hard on my bum on a hard floor on 23/12/06, since then have felt quite a bit of discomfort whilst sitting, sitting down, standing up, or having to bend down in anyway. The extremity of the pain has eased over the two weeks slightly and now I am able to move around better. I visited my GP who advised me I had a bruised tailbone.
Since then I have been feeling a consistent and rather deep aching in my right bum (the left side does feel uncomfortable, but the discomfort in the right side is very pronounced). I have been taking Ibuprofen, but still feel the uncomfortable aching in the right side of the bum. It almost feels like my bum is 'too boney' to sit on...strange but I can't think of anyway to explain it
I am unsure whether this is common in this type of situation? My doctor gave me little more information on what I should expect from bruising my tailbone, so I was a little concerned. Is this normal? Thanks

go back to the doctors, this happened to me and I put up with the aching and eventually developed an abscess on my tail bone I was in agony and had to be prescribed strong penicillin. I'm not trying to alarm you but at least tell the doctor even if it only gives you peace of mind. Please go back get well soon take it easy

Hope yours turns out better than mine! I Had a horse riding accident about 13 years ago and land right on my bum, which damaged by Coccyx (tailbone). Went through the same sort of agony as you for about 6 months, then get referred for Physio, went for 6 months and it didn't get any better. Next step was seeing a consultant who said i needed to have it injected with steroids and manipulated (apparently when it was healing it healed straight instead of bent). This involved General anaesthetic and an overnight stay in hospital. I felt like a new woman for about 3 months, but then the steroid ran out and the pain came back (admittedly not quite so acute). This procedure was carried out a further 3 times.
In the end the consultant would not do it again as it was deemed unsuccessful, and the only option was to have it removed. He did not recommend this as although the surgery is pretty minor the recovery is terrible because of infection (Think where they cut you to remove the bone & what happens in that vicinity!!!)
I decided not to have it done and must admit that 70% of the time I have minimal discomfort but if it is particularly cold it hurts like mad. Horse and bike riding are definite NONOs and anything else that involves bumping up and down.
Hopefully yours will not result in any of this, but I would recommend that you really rest it and give it as much oportunity to heal as possible.

I managed to slip on some ice and land hard on my bum , bashing my tail bone when i was 8 months pregnant so I feel your pain. It will hurt like hell for up to 6 weeks and may always be prone to ache if you sit down funny or anything. I did it nearly 10 years ago and still cant sit on a hard chair for long without that bony bum feeling and an ache.

Hi i have also done this which was very painful, and to top it all, when i gae birth to my daughter 9 yrs ago she moved the coccyx bone while coming own the birth cannel, the bone got very bruised and very uncomfortable for mths,i then had the decision off having the tail removed which i did,now its so much better but time to time when i sit for a long period pff time it down hurt like someone is sticking a knife up your back side. But i would advise hou,if you carry on getting alot off pain and discomfort, you should visit your gp again and he send your for a x-ray just to make sure you havent fractured or moved the ccooyx bone,Good Luck

Ibuprofen might help more than Tylenol. Sorry that's all I can say just wait it out. Maby sit on your coat at school. Tell the teacher you bruised your tail bone. There is a donut shaped pillow but it's too embarrassing to carry around. Hope you feel better soon.

I've done this...
Really, theres' nothing you can do about it if it's bruised... sorry. A heating pad may help, but I have some bad news...
... it hurts for a really long time.
I did mine when I was sitting down and my brothers father pulled out a chair from under me. I fell bad and it still cracks once in a while when I sit on something hard and I did it when I was about 10... I'm 20 now.

I think what you are experiencing is normal. Bruised coccyx take a long time to heal. I sat down hard on the corner of a wooden toy box some years ago and nearly fainted with the pain. Eventually I went to see an osteopath and she really helped me.

The only thing i can truly say is wear it of. You have got to live with the pain until it goes away. But do not worry, it doesnt have any long term consequences, it just hurts alot, i fell of a trampoline (yea, real bad) and the pain didnt go for a month. So my advice is: wear of the pain. And this is a common situation, it happens when you fall flat on the floor. Funny in theory but not funny in practice :D

I did the exact same thing once although I think I did more than bruise it because I can not sit for very long ever since and that was about 4 or 5 years ago.

I fractured my coccyx (tail bone) 4 years ago and it takes a very long time to get better. I had to lie flat for 3 weeks after I did it and still can't really sit for very long periods and it felt like I had a very boney bum (although I don't).

I bruised my tailbone last year when i fell while snowboarding. I couldn't sit properly for a couple of days. I could only sit really straight as slouching was painful. It sounds like you hurt yourself pretty badly if it is still sore. When did you see your doctor? It might be time to go back if you are still in pain.
