I guess that really depends on what your definition of the word "smart" is. I know for a fact that he is very very well educated, but i'm not sure how "smart" he accually is. I would say he is at least of above average intelligence.
I like to make a distinction between educated and intelligent (smart). Personaly, I think I am rather well educated, but as far as the smartness level I would say i'm probably about average. I think I take my experience mostly from college where although I was always good in class I had to work very very hard and alot of things didn't just come to me easily. So perhaps Dr. Hawking is kind of like me where he is just filled with information, yet he has to work harder than an average person to apply it to situations, and perhaps he is just a genious... who can know.

His intelligence, as for his intellectual learning could never be measured accurately he's so smart: I admire him: On the other hand and for practical purposes I wonder how smart he would be next to a craftsman IE:plumber, carpenter, welder, etc. There is a variation of "smart" and what is it?

My friends and I joke that Stephen Hawking is so smart, God had to cripple him to keep him from figuring out everything in the universe. We also say that we want to be just slightly less smart as Stephen Hawking, so that we are as smart as possible without God punishing us. :D

It sounds mean, but we really do look up to him. :)

Stephen Hawking is FLIPPING SMART.

Actually, I saw a television program about him. His mother claims that he would not be the physicist he is today if he was not sick. She said his illness gave him focus.
