The mobile phone networks need to use a monstrous amount of electrical power, and it's used all over the country. Electricity is generated in massive quantities, in a small number of places.
More than TWO THIRDS of the power is wasted in 'transmission losses'; basically, by heating up the wires and switches and transformers between where it's made and where it's used.
(Wind farms and Nuclear power stations are equally bad in this respect - they both make a lot of power, a long way from where it's needed.)
If we start to generate power from renewables, close to where it's used, then we need to choose how to use the available wind (for example). Running the local fridges, or keeping the local transmission mast broadcasting ?
Mobile phones are occasionally very useful, but most of the time they are used for very trivial purposes.
