Hay is dried grass--usually alfalfa grass. Straw, in contrast, are the stems of grain-producing plants such as wheat and barley. There is nutrition in hay, which is why it is fed to animals such as cattle and horses. There is no nutrition in straw, which is why it is used for animal bedding.
