I am 17 1/2 years old- old enough for most jobs open to high-school students. I am also very smart and capable. I can do manual work.
Problem? I'm deaf.

While my speech and comprehension is generally good enough to get by most of the time, I don't want to work at somewhere like a cashier job at Taco Bell or a Walmart's helper, where I'm required to talk to several different people all day long.

I'd REALLY like to find a part-time job but I have no idea where to look- it seems that the only places that have job openings for high-school students are restaurants or stores- and in there, I'll likely be placed as a waitress or a clerk/cashier... jobs that I don't think I would do very well at.

If anyone could come up with other ideas of employment that are better suited for deaf high-schoolers, I would appreciate it very much.

Nope, I don't live anywhere near Ontario, sorry.

Yeah, I thought about working at a local animal shelter but I don't think there's one nearby that is hiring.

The US Dept. of Labor has a great web site for researching occupations. You might want to check this out to do some research: http://www.bls.gov/oco/home.htm

If you live in London Ontario, email me. I have many jobs that you could do that doesn't require speaking to customers. I am the Operations Manager for a very large food service operation.....I also have contacts throughout Ontario that may be able to help out.

Did you try: I was a volunteer at a dog shelter and they hired deaf teens to walk the dogs and play with them. If you like dogs and this interests you, go your local animal shelters and ask about employment opportunities.
