I hesitate to answer Scrabble questions anymore, but here goes nothing:
I haven't used the Hasbro CD in ages, but I recall you don't need an interface (such as Zone.com) to play another player. If you have a chat program open with another player (or on the phone to them, etc) you can exchange IP addresses and hook up your games. It's fairly straightforward if you're computer literate, if not, well, nevermind that....
If you mean, is there another Zone-type site still around that will serve as an interface...I believe Gamespy.com does. Installing Gamespy involves some spyware (or at least it did when I tried it, fairly innocuous stuff but I said forget it, don't need it, and got rid of it).
As for playing without the Hasbro CD...the best place on the net, for free (or with extra unnecessary features if you pay) is www.isc.ro.
Even the world's top players play there (all the recent world champions, in fact), as well as beginners and everything in between. And good behaviour is tightly enforced, so you don't get lots of attitude and abuse from strangers.
Other sites, to me, are pretty trashy.

I agree with Alomi, go to www.games.com and once you're at that website, scroll down and look to your right, their are games and there should be scrabble listed, once you clicked it, you need to register and make an account, it's simple and free, after that, you'll be notified in your email and then you login, after that you click any lobby and start playing whomever. It's fun and you can chat to people. When playing scrabble and stuck on words, open a new window (internet) and go to www.scrabble.com then click the english box and there is an entry to search words for those tough words for example, don't be fooled when people put "AA" as a word cuz it's an actual word, so it's best to have that when playing scrabble. Hope i helped!

Not sure where you can play online but I have a cd rom called scrabble 2003 interactive which is excellent, it has loads of programmes as well as conundrams and anagrams and you can use it to link up to the internet and play up to three players, you can pick it up on ebay for a couple of quid.

Hi there,
To download for free Scrabble you can click here: http://j.mp/1oh7ZBq
In this board game, there are some rules to follow. At first, you have your own set of tiles, and you must create your own words to play in order for you to have your score.
It's the best game of its category.

www.pogo.com has a scrabble game you can download and play against others. I believe you have to pay for it though.
