An age old question, to be sure.
Fact is - no one knows. There are countless theories and tons of speculation - but no way to verify or prove any of these.
For starters, you ask, "In the beginning," and this premise alone is based on the assumption that there was indeed a "beginning."
The premise of "absolutely nothing" is also an assumption.
We are constantly making new discoveries, but the scientific answer to this one may be a long time in coming, if ever.

The short answer is that we don't know. We simply do not have the knowledge we need to understand what was going on at that time. In the future, I'm sure we will get closer to knowing the truth.

The long answer, is that string theory has some ideas as to how OUR universe was created (with the big bang) inside of the huge multi-verse which we cant even fathom at this time.

There was always something. It is now understood that there are multiple universes or parallel universes. When these collide, a new universe is formed. We now know there are 11 dimensions, not just the 4 of up/down, left/right, back/forth, and time as previously thought. I've watched a lot of TV specials on this recently.

yeah i wouldnt go so far as to say we understand. A good theory currently for the Big Bang and how everything started is Membrane Theory, or M-Theory, which is basically the next evolution in String Theory
