Amanda is absolutely correct in the our primary power is right to vote for leaders we believe will act in your best interest.

Unfortunately most politicians in order to get elected must raise so much money that they end up being controlled by the corporate special interests who hold the purse-strings.

Some states can hold referendums to remove corrupt or inept leaders. And there always the ultimate option of revolution. Whenever the ends of government are perverted, and public liberty manifestly endangered, and all other means of redress are ineffectual, the people may, and of right ought to reform the old, or establish a new government.

Because the elected officials are considered the voice of the people. Sometimes laws are made that not everyone likes. They are for the public good. Every politician in this country is up for reelection eventually. That is how you influence gov't by voting them out or in as needed. Most states even have recall ( Arnold did it in Ca) As a citizen, you also legally have the power to draft a law. Buissinesses, unions etc do it all the time.

are you talking about like, a personal veto power, or a vote? If something is that big a deal, and if other people really agree with you, you should organize a block of voters to let the politicians know that a large number of voters will not vote for a politician who fails to address this issue.

The National-Union feels that some citizens refuse to care about legislation. First, they would have to gather up signatures of residents on their petition then mail it to their State legislature. If the legislature refuse then build a campaign to place their petition in their General Election for a statewide vote, http://www.voteprimous.com

The people's say in government is to elect those individuals.
By electing them you trust that they will act in your best interest.
