It´s very simple, English is an idiom where the gender of things (or persons) is not always indicated.

It means that sometimes there is one word to talk about the "female" type of something, and sometimes there is a different word to talk about the "male" type of something. but it is not the only rule.

So if there are words such "actress" and "actor", people can choose both when speak about "female persons". Neverthless is incorrect using "actress" to talk about "male persons", BECAUSE the more peculiar word is "actress", invented exclusively to be applied to "female persons".

equality of course, its also cool, times have moved on, as i am informed it is 2007! i cant be bothered to say actress(es) too much to deliver in a sentence hehehehe!! when i think of someone like Sandra Bullock, i think she is a great actor!! the male/female thing isnt an issue anymore!!

I think actress is a relatively new term, the term actor didn't originate as a male term, more like athlete - you don't hear female athletes referred to as athletess!

its their choice not to be the female version of their profession, just a professional in their own right. For instance a plumber, you wouldnt know wot to expect just a qualified person.

In this age of equallity all sexes are cast as one ,so there are no more Women Police Constable all are PC's . No more knickers they are all pants. no more spinsters they are bachelor women.Does it really matter !
