First read a general book, such as 'eBay for dummies'. There are also lots of Adobe pdf eBooks on eBay selling on the net.
Are you going to compete on price and sell mass-produced goods that are identical to those sold by hundreds of other people or profit from selling something unique that they can't get elsewhere, such as art, antiques or collectables?
Tip 1
------
Something I read once about a trading-business, such as selling things in a street-market, is that 'You make money when you buy, not when you sell'.
What this means is ...
1. People can buy goods from lots of people at pretty-much the same sale-price. You don't have the power to make more profit by raising prices, as they will just buy from someone else.
2. Your profit is the difference between the buying and selling price.
3. The cheaper you can buy things for, the higher your profits.
Therefore, instead of putting 80% of your effort into advertising and selling and fulfilling orders better than other sellers, put 80% of your effort into searching for cheap supplies of goods to sell.
This could be closing-down sales, bankruptcy auctions, direct imports from hong kong (of things like USB flash drives, etc), goods from a long distance from where you live.
Tip 2
------
Identify the hot items (such as consumer electronics) from eBay hot items reports and google's most popular search terms.
Tip 3
------
If you have a day-job and are doing this as a sideline. Don't take any cash out of the business for quite a while. Re-invest it in more stock and sell more each month. If you can make 20% profit each month, your total cash builds up by compound exponential growth: original cash x 1.20 x 1.20 x 1.20 x 1.20 etc. At 20% a month, it doubles every 4 months, so you have $6000 after 4 months, $12000 after 8 months, $24000 after 12 months, etc. This is better than withdrawing and spending the profits each month.
Tip 4
------
You can sell services as well as goods on eBay, under the 'speciality services' section. You may need less cash to start a service than to start selling goods and you don't get any unsold stock. See what services other people are offering. Quite a lot of people just offer 'a man with a van', to shift furniture or boxes or deliver parcels.

I went to Ebay live this year in chicago, and wow did I learn a lot. I've had an Ebay store for about 6 months now and have done okay, but not gotten rich by any means. I found out the electronics are very hard to sell on Ebay, because there are so so many other people selling them, especially ipods and wiis. But, if your set on selling them, I would recommend other auction sites, because they aren't so crowded with competition like ebay. You may have a better chance at selling them. Good luck!

Check amazon.com and local book stores for books about starting an eBay business. There are many such titles available.
