Being a team player means putting the interests of the group ahead of your own, cooperating with the group and not trying to make things difficult in group situations, projects, etc. It means you would be a person people would want to pick to be on their team because they know you would do your share of the work.

in the real world it means being a yes man or woman.
in theory a member of a team willing to go the extra mile and express opinions which may differ from your boss's.the latter bit means in reality shut up and agree with the boss or else.
now and the there are exceptions ,but they are truly rare.!!
