I work for a really small company and have been asked to follow up with some former employers of a potential hire. I am not an HR professional. Any pointers on what I should ask about the candidate?

A former employer has to be careful what negative things they may say to you so you need to word your questions carefully.
One good one to ask is "Would you hire this person again?" Why or why not.
Good luck

I'd be careful if I was you. My understanding was that if you call a former employer, all you can do is verify if the interviewee worked there or not...you cannot ask about their performance, etc. BUT, as I don't know this for sure, I would check with someone who may know (HR, legal expertise). I don't know if it is a law...federal, or just my state. But please be careful.
