I want to say Buddy Rich, I also want to say Gene Krupa. But I will say Sandy Nelson. (Let There Be Drums) If you've never heard him, his drum playing is a real treat!

I think a lot has to do with the song. If you take away all but the drums, many of the drummers sound the same. So to find the best drummer, you can go for speed in metal, or go all over the place with jazz. When it comes to the top drummers, I doubt anybody can tell them apart if they are playing the same songs.

What a hugely subjective question. Charlie Watts comes to mind, but I've always loved watching Matt Frenette play the drums, he was a wild man. Played first for Streetheart, then for Loverboy.

Of course, the big bald man of the skins, Jerry Mercer of April Wine can bash with the best of them. I still remember his 20 minute solo during April Wine's "One For The Road" tour in the 80s.

John Boecklin is a drummer for Death metal band DevilDriver. He is regarded as one of the best drummers the metal world has ever seen. His extremly talented foot work along with speed keeps him in the respect of all his fans and peers. John also plays guitar. He played guitar on their album, "The Fury of Our Maker's Hand" along with drums. Some nicknames given to him by fans are; Johnny B, Boecklin, and John B. There's no way to select just one:

Keith Moon (I think he's the inspiration for the muppet Animal)
Terry Bozzio (check his set out on YouTube: Terry Bozzio Drum Kit Setup Time Lapse)
Stewart Copeland (The Police and Oysterhead are favorites)
Billy Martin (Medeski, Martin, and Wood....check them out)
Mike Portnoy (Liquid Tension Experiment, Dream Theatre)
Buddy Rich ("Traps")
Tim "Herb" Alexander (Primus)
John Bonham (you know who he is)
Neil Peart (the dude from Rush)
Billy Cobham (Spectrum - his most popular album)
Max Roach
Art Blakey
Dave Weckyl
Gregg Bissonette
Jeff Campitelli

...and that's just off the top of my head...

i give the dude from def leppard credit, playing with one arm. but i think john dolmayan [system of a down] is a great drummer and joey jordison [slipknot], although overrated a bit, is great.

oh man someone put the def leppard guy before me :( .
oh and of course john bonham [led zeppelin], he's my favorite drummer evah. one of my idols [trying to learn to play some of his stuff]
