No. Usually bright colors on animals means poison. But with those turtles, no.

For the most part, the answers you have gotten are poking around the truth but not getting there. Jose is close. You will not be able to tell the difference until they are sexually mature. At that time, the male's front claws will be significantly longer than his rear claws. If there is any doubt, you have either a female or an immature male. This works for sliders, cooters, painted turtles, and their close relatives. You have the same problem with the general technique for sexing. Look at the underside of the tail. Find the vent. With the tail held straight back, is the vent under the carapace (upper shell)? If so, you have a female or an immature male. If the vent is beyond the carapace, you have a mature male. The shape of the plastron (lower shell) is useful in turtles with high domed shells, not so good for sliders. The other advice you have gotten is just plain wrong. Just in case someone advises probing or popping, don't have it done. I have yet to meet the vet whom I would trust to do either without injuring the turtle. I certainly would not trust a pet shop clerk or an amateur turtle-keeper. If you are really lucky and have a male, he will evert his penis briefly and you will be sure.

Read-eared Sliders (RES) are not poisonous at all...I don't believe any turtles are. However, they can carry salmonella when they are young, so it is a good idea to leave the little ones (Shells under 4 inches can not be legally sold in most areas of the USA) alone. It is always a good idea to wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling turtles (any animal really) to keep both you and the critter healthy!

No they are not poisonous but if you are not careful you can salmonella poisoning by not washing your hands after playing with them. This is not because the turtle is poisonous just because they are dirty and swim in thier own waste. Hope this helps

No, they are harmless, and if you ever get bit, do not worry (Despite what everyone else said) because it is harmless, and you will more than likely just have redness in that area, not something you want to waste $500 just for a doctor to say "You are ok". You just have to be careful about selmonela; I had it once from uncooked food and it is not fun.

No. In fact no turtles are poisonous... err... venomous.
They can carry salmonella (that's the REAL way to spell it people), but it's not common or rampant enough to worry about too much. Just wash your hands after you handle them and you should have no worries.

Nope but they can carry a disese called selmonella. I think that a symtom is diarreaha, so if you got bit by one, then I would go to a doctor.
