I say Good Morning out of respect and to aknowledge the other person. And no I am not really concerned when I do say to others, only those who I care about.

I say it as a greeting in the morning , I say GOOD Evening in the evening. Yes I mean it when I say it. I do not say it to everyone.
But you know what , ? It usually puts a smile on someones face.
Sometimes you run into GRUMP-A-LUMPS that won't smile or greet you back but I just say FINE don't smile, you have a nice day anyhow.

You have a very pleasant evening.

I was raised to be polite and greet people, even when they don't greet me back. It is just good manners and it shows class. It depends on the person and my mood, usually I' am concerned, but some days I' am not.

To some it comes from genuine concern. Where as with others, it is just a matter of being courteous.

It's just force of habit. Do you really want to say "I hope you have a horrible morning."?

I say "Good Morning", to offer a smile, a greeting, and acknowledgment of their presence. And, yes, I mean it.
