I bought a 98 astra last week. I took it on the motorway earlier today for the first time when engine management warning light came on, does anyone know possible causes for this to happen??

If the car is pulling as normal, has no steam coming out the bonnet and isn't knocking when you go downhill at 35MPH in second gear (the test for engine faults) then ignore it. On a 98 car it will probably be a sensor fault or a fault so minor it has no relevance. On many Vauxhalls that will happen because you have less than 50% life left on your brake pads, so they will last another 20,000 miles easily. It tends to be a way of earning money out of you as opposed to a vehicle diagnostic.

Remember an Astra is a middle-of-the-road car, and in 98 the technology to detect serious faults only went into the most sophisticated of cars. Unless you can feel a fault there is nothing wrong with it. Don't fix it if it's not broken.

what it is is someones idea of another gimmick.the light comes on and is supposed to tell you that the car needs a service.Mine kept coming on all the time when it felt like it. there is a procedure for resetting by depressing the accelerator pedal while the ignition lights are on , but you have not started the engine , might be the same as mine

People are just throwing out ideas here, there are hundreds of possibilities. If it is on, there is a problem. Take it over to auto zone and they will hook up their obd II scanner to you car for free and tell you exactly what is wrong. HOPE THIS HELPS!!
