It probably helps to break it down and think in terms of units that you can mentally picture
(all conversions are approximate)
1 metre by 500 metres = 3 feet by 1/3 mile
or 10 metres by 50 metres = 33 feet by 164 feet
or 22.4 metres by 22.4 metres = 73 1/2 feet by 73 1/2 feet

Pace out 22m in one direction, make a 90 degree turn and pace another 22 m,repeat until you are back where you started .The square you have created is just under 500sq m.
for exactly 500sq m you would have to measure 22.36068m instead of 22m.

A little larger than 4500 square feet
It depends on what you compare it with, small to land a Boeing on, large to clean with a toothbrush, VERY decent for a house.
