Think about it for a second. If there were no bridges, the Mississippi river would really divide the country and New York City would be inaccessible except by ferry or helicopter.
Basically commerce would be something significantly different than it is today.

It brings people together easier than having to swim, boat or wait till the stream freezes over to see those on the other side.

They allow for more rapid and open commercial trade. They cut down the amount of money companies lose due to fuel costs and allows for greater expansion of commerce because of more rapid shipment of products. Basically, on-road commercial product delivery is more efficient, as is all on-road travel over waterways and land gaps.
