Don't stop being nice, but stop letting people take advantage of you.
I am almost 55 years old, have been nice much of my life, and yes have had people take advantage, "kick me in the teeth", snub me after they got what they wanted, etc, etc, etc. BUT, I will never stop being nice. I meet friends everyday. Where would I be if I let the bad experiences stop me from being me? I would be a bitter, hateful person with no friends. NOT ME!!
You can be nice, just stop letting people use you as a door mat. Be honest with them when they hurt you or when you think they haven't acknowledged your help. No one will know what they have done if you don't let them know. Be open and honest with them and hope they will return the favor.
If they are just users, you won't see them around much, except when they need something from you. In that case, kindly and gently say NO!!!
Only you allow people to continue to use you. Only you can stop it.
Stay nice. Stay sweet.

I understand where you're coming from. I've always been the nice person and too scared to speak my mind thinking that I would hurt someone's feelings. But then when I thought about it..people always said things to me that hurt my feelings and didn't care. So I got tired of being nice and having people walk over me. I was always the person that did something for someone else but people took my kindness for granted. But after awhile I just said man F it...I'm not going to keep letting people talk to me any kind of way and not speak up for myself. Now that I do no one has anything to say to me...as if they're shocked I stood up for myself.
I guess it pays to be a "B" these days...you get way more respect for it. Don't get me wrong, I'm still nice when its time to be. But if someone crosses me the wrong way..thats when I have to act like the "B".

I think there is a fine line betwee being a good person and being a door mat. Everyone should strive to be a good person, but if you feel like people are taking advantage of you and find yourself just smiling and accepting it....then you should put that backbone to use. Respect yourself and others will respect you.

Sometime you can be too helpful. Be careful that feeling sorry and helping them doesn't move into not allowing them to grow and learn from their mistakes. Sometimes when people take the situation for granted it's because they didn't learn.

It's bad to be good now days. Where is the reward? People will just walk all over you and take advantage of you. Fk being good. I use to believe in being good but to hell with it. It will get you no where fast.

A good person in an evil society seems the greatest villain of all.
