After replacing my cpu cooler, i tuned on my computer, but the power light does not come on, and the screen is blank. There is noise going on inside of my computer. What does the thermal grease do? and What would happen if i dont apply the thermal grease and just replace the cpu cooler? Please help me, my computer is sitting in my garage!!!

Then your CPU will overheat. You must put on thermal grease, or your PC will be unusable. You must do it properly as well, remove any old material and clean it thoroughly, and properly apply the correct amount of thermal grease before replacing your heatsink.

The thermal grease is a conductant. It transfers heat from the cpu to the cpu cooler heatsink. Without the grease the system may overheat. I'm not sure what your situation is but I would do the following:

1. disconnect the power..
2. Open case and remove the cmos battery, (it looks similar to a watch battery only larger on the motherboard)
3. Remove the cpu cooler and apply a small amount of thermal grease (very thin only on the die portion of the chip, see cpu instructions)
4. reinstall cpu cooler
5. reinstall cmos battery
6. restart machine.

Removing the cmos battery cleared the system bios so if the machine boots you will have to go to the bios setup and check all the settings. If it doesn't start you may have damaged the cpu take it to a repairman.

Good Luck

Use a cotton swab or sparkling rag, and rubbing alcohol. do not get rid of the processor from the motherboard. merely go away it in and placed alcohol on the rag and wipe the processor die sparkling of debris... Then take your thermal compound and placed a dab contained in the middle and take a mastercard and spread it round on the die of the CPU flippantly. you should visual demonstrate unit really extra to get complete insurance. only a imagine layer is all you want... i love Artic Silver5 inspite of the indisputable fact that it truly is slightly extreme priced, $10 a tube at Radio Shack...

That won't keep the computer from starting up the first time. If the power light doesn't come on, you probably blew the motherboard with improper static precautions.
