Somewhere in between. We are a social species and would not be happy without social bonds. Family, friends, neighbors- they are important not just to our economic health, but also to our mental health. We really can't live without each other. However, us Westerners are an independent lot, and we wouldn't be happy stifling ourselves all the time for the good of our fellows. Economically, I think we need both socialism and capitalism, to temper each other, and socially, I think finding a middle ground between strict rules and freedom of expression is important.

Recent research in the Netherlands found that the electromagnetic energy wave, or, brainwave and associated feeling that humans emit that matches the mean or average frequency of the Universe is COMPASSION. We, as matter, rise from rocks to gut to thought. Capitalism or "dog eat dog" or "survival of the fittest" is awareness of the gut. "All of us or none of us" is awareness of the thought. It is a higher order of existence.

"Society " is merely the collection of individual men, women and their families. It has been as many variable things as are variable humans. Stop thinking of society as some disembodied force that shapes humanity, as that is truly social science delusion.
