Okay. I'm pregnant, and have been DYING all day for some greenbean casserole!! I have all the ingredients, but the expiration date on the bottom of my Cream of Mushroom soup says November of 2006. Do you think that it would still be good? It's Campbells brand.

As a chef, who's also 38 weeks pregnant, I would advise against using the can of soup for a few reasons...

1) Although the food in the can may smell and taste normal, food borne illness' like Chlostridium Botulinum (Botulism), which is commonly associated with canned goods, cannot be detected by your senses (ie...there will be no taste or foul odor) and the can may not have swelling or rust while the bacteria is present because the product is just past the expiration date

2) If you should get sick from eating the expired soup, Cambel's isn't liable for your medical treatment. Call the customer service number on the can and odds are they are going to tell you to buy a new can (and probably send you some coupons)

3) When you are pregnant your immune system is compromised, so you are more suseptable to illness. This means that it takes less bacteria for you to get sick.

4) Eating something that is expired could negativly effect the health of your unboorn child.

If you should choose to eat the soup please keep a few things in mind. Botulism, if present, takes extended periods at high temp to kill. (there are many other bacteria that could be present) Low acid foods are at a higher risk of growing and containing bacteria.

(please keep in mind that Botulism is an example of bacteria...athough it used to be fatal, very few people actually die from it in this day and age...appox 65 a year or so mostly infants...BUT food borne illness is very serious and will make you at the very least extremly uncomfortable)

Ultimately the choice is yours, but peronally I'd just buy a new can especially since it is a low cost item.

Most soups are good for at least 6 months past the expiration date on the can. The only exception would be if the can has any bulges or defects in the can. If the cans is ok you are ok eating that soup.

It should be fine. If you have any doubts you should call the company and ask them for advice, it;s their product. I do believe you would be fine. with my first child I was eating expired canned food from food banks. As long as the can is intact and no dents I give it a go ahead.

It will be ok! Canned food's last FOREVER! They are non perishable! Companies have to put an experation dates on EVERYTHING. Go ahead and make your casserole and enjoy!!

I would toss it and go buy a new can. Why take the chance of foodborne illness? and it probably wont taste very good now that its expiored. That stuff has a LONG shelf life, so if its expired, then you know its ancient!

If it has an expiration date, it's probably there for a reason...I wouldn't risk it.

You shouldn't eat anything past the expiration date. if you are craving, then go to the grocery store and get a new can.
