For early videos, I think you can make a case for A-Ha's "Take On Me". For sure, this creative video, with its hand-drawn pencil sketches for animation, sold the song - no way the song would have made the top 10 without it. The style of the video also had a definite impact on later videos.
Honorable mention: Herbie Hancock's "Rock It".
I don't think "Thriller" should be considered - that wasn't a video, it was a short movie. :)
