I was always told that a diamond is the hardest natural rock.

Everyone is saying diamond, but diamond is not a rock. It is a mineral.

Rocks are mixture of minerals.

I actually don't know the answer to your question of which rock is actually the hardest. I would guess some sort of metamorphic rock (rocks formed from intense heat and pressure of the earth)

I dont know if you consider this a rock, but the hardest thing in the world are diamonds. That is why when doun a hardness test of new elements they use a diamond to scratch the surface of whatever it is that is being tested. No man made metal is harder than diamonds to date

As with Yoda, I went to wiki--
Diamond is the hardest known natural material (third-hardest known material below aggregated diamond nanorods and ultrahard fullerite). Diamonds can be scratched only by other diamonds, Borazon, ultrahard fullerite, or aggregated diamond nanorods, which also means they hold a polish extremely well and retain luster. You can only cut a diamond with another diamond.

Diamond is not a rock, but a mineral. The hardest rock is some sort of granite-type igneous rock derivative. May be quartz monzonite?

if you eliminate volcanic magma and mineral deposits you are left with GRANITE (sorry should have listed volcanic glass instead of magma since granite was formed from magma )

and even tho diamond is popular and is technically 'rock' it is considered a mineral deposit as opposed to the building blocks of the continents like granite or limestone and is found within other materials ( that is why it is a deposit ) not as a layer of rock ( there is no diamond strata )
