There's a better product for rust protection than por15 (the old standard).... called RustSeal by KBS Coatings. It's also a 3 step system but their products have advanced formulations ...like oxygen block inhibitors. Rustseal has better adhesion, richer deeper pigments & even finishes and improved UV stability. Rustseal's formulation allows it to seep deep down into the metal pores to block all access to water& oxygen. It's pigments are better dispersed & hold up better to UV rays. Por15 chalks up quickly & its black pigments rub off like soot. KBS satin finish looks like true OEM. It also cures quicker & sands smoother w/o gumming up. Also less expensive!!!

You want to clean the metal very well before any paint is put on. Before you paint it clean with wax n grease remover to git rid of all the grease from your hands. With the paint put down primer 1st then put a sealer down. The primer and sealer will only protect the metal from rust for 2 to 3 weeks.

Look for a product called POR-15; it's a rust-buster that dries to black, silver, gray, clear or semi-gloss black. It's a three step process. First you use the degreaser, then it neutralizes the rust and finally stop the rust forever with the top coat. They offer a starter kit for $ 16.50 (you select which colour. I've used it on my old Chrysler and was very pleased with the results. Visit their website for further info.

You need an epoxy sealer or primer sealer. You can also use bluing acid first. Good luck.
