How about "Synergy". Synergy is about how the world is becoming more "one" due to technology. In other words, it's about the "rise of the global brain". This would be fun to do a project on because you would show evidence of this happening - seeing pictures on the news about flooding in Bangladesh, an ice hotel in Sweden, a man from Canada suing "America's Funniest Videos", etc. You'd also talk about internet usage and how it has allowed us to communicate with each other in ways never before possible. One example is how people around the planet are becoming more and more knowledgable about global warming.

For a poem you could use John Lennon's lyrics to his song "Imagine" (it actually describes the internet rather well). Also check out some of the things written my Marshall McLuhan (a communications guru from the sixties, he coined the term "the medium is the message" - in other words, it's not so much WHAT you say, it's HOW it's being said). Throw in a few good quotes by Mcluhan and refer to some of his articles. You'll come across as original, creative, and intelligent.

The reason they picked sports is because it's very "organic". That is to say It is ever changing over the 6 month period. You could pick something like the weather... sounds mundane but you can find loads of poetry on that subject.
