Yes, you need the snake equipment. It will work like a charm.
If you need more info about the equipment, check out this page: http://www.doityourself.com/stry/unclogtubdrain

Get the thick, gloopy stuff, not the thin watery stuff. And use a good amount, like pour for a couple seconds. (you're supposed to use about one cup, as in measuring cup -- dont use a food measuring cup though :) ). Then make sure you let it sit for half an hour (try not to go much more or less) and then try to get the water hot as possible as quick as possible.
That's the best way. Really hard clogs can take multiple cleanings. If you just put down lots of dog hair, that could definitely require multiple uses.
I find that the thin watery stuff doesn't work nearly as well as the thick gloopy stuff. With a slow clog, the watery stuff will just drain through the clog and not really work on it, but the gloopy stuff is less likely or fast to drain through.
Short of that, call a plumber.

I would try a bottle of Pequa drain opener, can be found at HD. This is good stuff, follow the directions. Liquid plumber and the like cant compare to this. If you go the route of having to snake the line, make sure that all drain openers have drained and been rinsed down the line, otherwise you run the risk of getting a burn from them while trying to snake.

I had a similar problem upstairs, you need a snake but I noticed last time I was in the hardware store they now sell a thin piece of barbed plastic that's flexible enough to get around the trap for around $5. If the clog is not to far down the pipe you may want to try that otherwise renting a snake beats buying one.

The best way is to get a small drain snake, (it's like a hand cranked roto rooter and can be bought at Walmart). Run it through. Works good, try to ignore the giant, wet hairball that comes out with it.

Try one that works good on hair.. Other than that you will need a plumber or whats called a "snake" which can physically unclog your drain. There may also be piping/gravity problems
