Scholarships are usually quite hard to get. It's not a case of you just being unable to afford it but often you have to be quite badly off to qualify. Have a look at these sites to see what's on offer:

Also, ask at your local private school (or whatever private school that you have in mind) to see what they offer in terms of scholarships and hardship funds. Sometimes you might be able to get a discount if your child proves to be a worthy potential pupil.

Another idea for you is to send the child to a state primary school, giving you time to save for a private high school, where class sizes/teaching quality becomes more of a vital point.

No, of course they won't look down their noses! There are scholarships and bursaries exactly for people like you.

However, there is likely to be some form of entrance exam since the school will be keen to hand out the money to the child(ren) they consider most 'deserving'!

Some scholarships also have conditions attached by the original benefactor(s) which place requirements on the background, education or place of residence of the prospective pupils.

Chose a school and ask them about it, or check out the link to the Independant Schools Council. You've nothing to lose!

The school should be the ones to handle scholarships and bursaries. Explain the situation to them and they should be able to offer you a bursary or an exam for a scholarship. No they're fine about it, they are human!
